What is Rolfing?

Rolfing Structural Integration was developed by a biochemist and therapist, Dr. Ida P. Rolf as a way of bodywork that restructures the connective tissues, called FASCIA that spread throughout the body. By blending Science and Spirituality in the same breath, Dr. Rolf revolutionized the field of bodywork forever.

Dr. Rolf claimed that muscular tensions and pent up emotions are very much correlated. She observed that our body is a system of infinite network of connective tissues that encircle, assist and penetrate all of the muscles, bones, nerves and organs. Dr. Rolf recognized the web-like network of connective tissues and then developed ‘Structural Integration’ to realign and balance the whole body. In simple words, proper alignment and balancing of the body in its volume and totality is what Structural Integration is all about.

Align Yourself… Feel Better… Stand Taller… Breathe Easier!!!

How it Works?

According to Dr. Rolf it is not just the alignment of ‘Spine’, rather we need to align our head, ankle, hips, thorax, pelvis, knees, shoulders, head, ears, etc., for correct posture and for general well-being or else the evils of gravity will depreciate personal energy leading to a unhealthy body. Manipulating the connective tissue system of the body in order to realign the body structurally and harmonizing its movement with gravity is what Rolfing is all about.

How Structural Integration helps you grow taller?

Rolfing Structural Integration gives us the opportunity to realign all the body parts in perfect alignment with earth’s gravity in a way to minimize the effect of gravity to our body. With minimized effect of gravity on spine and all other parts of the body, we will feel less compressed and be able to stand up taller leading to overall increase in height. Rolfing supports our body to integrate proper balance & alignment and coordination for sitting, standing and moving at any stage of life, and you can gain anywhere from 3 to 4 inches as rotations in the body begin to unwind.

The bottom line is, Rolfing SI nourishes the body to restore the natural integrity of its form and boosting postural efficiency and the freedom of movement.

Rolfing SI is more than just Massage.

Rolfing involves deep massage but is more than just Massage. Through a marriage of science and art, Rolfing is a pure genius of restructuring the entire body – leading to a more ordered, organized, pattern that aligns and balance the body with the gravitational field in the accepted or approved manner. By applying pressure and energy, Rolfing reshapes the myofascial structure of the body and frees it from the effects of physical and emotional traumas. It is meant to counteract the effects of earth’s gravity, which over a period of time pulls the body out of healthy alignment.

The harder and stiffer connective tissues lead to stiffness, contraction as well as slouching of muscles. In order to break up these knots of stiffness in the fascia and resetting the muscles, Rolfing practitioners apply appropriate pressure and energy with their thumbs, fingers, elbows, knuckles, and knees. The treatments can cause a temporary discomfort and degree of pain but Rolfing practitioners view this as a sign of achieving the changes necessary to get the body back into healthy alignment.

What are the benefits?

Rolfing Structural Integration is a road that leads towards personal empowerment. Rolfing SI is an intense advanced therapy designed to:

  • enhance postural efficiency and alignment throughout the body
  • improve self-awareness
  • restore flexibility and discover greater ease in sitting, standing and enhancing the freedom of movement
  • resolve discomfort, release tension and alleviate pain
  • transform the body’s emotional traumas and its habitual limitations

What is the Rolfing SI 10-Series?

rolfing to grow taller

The trademark of Structural Integration is a standardized series of ten sessions. These 10 sessions form an arch of a journey that focuses on reshaping and reorganizing both the structure and freedom of movement and expression of the entire body according to clearly defined principles in a systematic manner. Each session of the series has its distinct set of goals. The Rolfing 10-Series can be divided into three unique units as follow:

The first three sessions are called ‘Sleeve Sessions’, and focuses on unbinding and balancing surface layers of FASCIA.

1st Session: Rolfing first session is dedicated to improve and establish more balanced breathing pattern providing support to the torso, shoulders, neck and head. Start working around the hip joint and legs to mobilize the pelvis.

2nd Session: Working around the feet, lower legs and knees to provide the upper body more stable foundation.

3rd Session: The 3rd session of Rolfing especially works on ‘side view’ of the body and distinguishes soft tissue of the pelvis from that of the ribs to provide more movement options for the pelvis. This provides an understanding how the head, shoulder girdle, and hips are correlated while standing under the earth’s gravity.

The next four sessions (i.e. 4-7) are referred to as ‘Core Sessions’, and focuses on examining deep tissues support from the bottom of the pelvis to the top of the head.

4th Session: In the 4th session, start working to create a core of support in the legs by approaching from the inner arches of the feet and up the leg, to the bottom of the pelvis.

5th Session: The 5th session focuses to lengthen and soften the outer abdominal wall to establish a more balanced relationship between inner and outer structures.

6th Session: The 6th session addresses the deep tissues of the back of the spine to create more freedom of movement and resilience in the whole spine.

7th Session: The 7th session emphasized to work in, on, and around the head to balance the rhythms of cranial movement.

The remaining three sessions (i.e. 8, 9 and 10) turn their sole attention to blend previously established advancements and integrate the entire body in such a way that stimulate smooth movement and natural coordination.

8th Sessions: During the 8th session the practitioner works with pelvic girdle and limbs to integrate lower body and better support for the upper body, keeping a unique protocol for each individual.

9th Session: In this session the practitioner works with the shoulder girdle and limbs to integrate upper body and establish more balanced relationship to the lower body.

10th Session: The 10th and final session importantly works to integrate entire body and galvanize a sense of order and balance from the feet up to the head.

Once completed, the Rolfing SI 10-Series will leave your structure at optimum balanced place for years to come.
